Now, years ago, I might’ve tried to “fix” that with more gear or more pressure. But through the lens of Patrick Harris Horsemanship, I’ve learnt to ask: “What’s he trying to say?” Because true horsemanship isn’t just about controlling the horse—it’s about understanding the moment. So instead of pushing back harder, I slowed things down. Broke the session into simple asks. Rewarded the smallest try. And gave Toby the time to figure out he didn’t need to be in control to feel safe. Saturday Storytime – “𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗜 𝗚𝗼𝘁 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗮 𝗣𝗼𝗻𝘆” 🐴 So there I was, feeling confident. Had the groundwork gear in hand, hat on straight, and a plan in mind. Enter: one very opinionated pony. Goal? Yield the hindquarters. Result? Pony blinked… turned... and sat down. I stood there, rope in hand, thinking: “Well, that wasn’t in the manual.” 🤦‍♂️ Turns out, she did know how to yield—she just also knew how to test her handler. So I laughed, reset, and this time led with softness, not just a checklist. She got up. Walked off. Worked like a dream. Lesson learned (by me): It’s not just about what you ask—it’s how you ask it. Even the cheeky ones have something to teach us.
